Our Verdict

As far as other tiered cash back credit cards go, the Capital One Savor offers a lower average annual fee with a broad range of high earning categories. If you are an avid eater and attend entertainment events quite often, earning back the $95 annual fee shouldn’t be too big a challenge with the Savor card.

Best Suited for:

Group-11597-2

Always-on-the-road

Travel is your middle name. When you aren’t taking advantage of transit for your daily commute in the form of cabs, rideshares and trains, you are looking for a weekend escape. And if there is an opportunity to go somewhere, you take it. You are into earning miles, getting hotel upgrades, eating out and making sure your car is always fueled.

Group-11597-2

Foodie

If there is a new restaurant opening, you are there. You are all about the latest food fusion trend no one has heard of and putting it on the map. You love finding the best new restaurant but also like to go to your old standbys and earning cash back for all. And when you aren’t finding the best new restaurant, you are experimenting with recipes at home, so you also need a good card for reaping the rewards of grocery shopping.

Group-11597-2

Social butterfly

You are a person of the people and love to hang out with your friends whether it is a beautiful meal out, attending a sporting event or rocking out at a live concert. If something fun is happening, you want to be there and get rewarded for it.

Group-11597-2

Pantry stocker

You are not happy unless you have a kitchen full of food. You are the designated grocery person in your household, and you are good at it. But what you really like is getting cash back for spending in this category.

Hidden perks

The standout factor of the Savor card offered by Capital One is the ability to spend your cash back on purchases from Amazon. Additionally, card holders are allowed to redeem their cash back for any amount, rather than having to redeem the entire sum at once.

Pair this card with:

Citi Double Cash

citi-Premier

Given that the Capital One Savor is a tiered card, there are two strategies you can use when pairing it to another card. First, consider a flat rate card that offers a higher percentage back on all other purchases. For example, the Citi Double Cash card offers 2% back on all purchases – 1% at the time of purchase and 1% for every dollar paid back each billing cycle. If pairing with the Savor, use your Double Cash card for all purchases outside of the tiered categories.

Cashback Example

Say in a given month you spend $3,000. $1,000 was spent on groceries, $800 was spent at restaurants and fast-food, $1,000 was spent at various entertainment events, and $200 was on miscellaneous expenses. You will have earned 3% on the $1,000 you spent on groceries, 4% on both the $800 for dining and $1,000 for entertainment events, and 1% on the remaining $200. This would come to a sum total of $104 in cash back rewards for the month.
